Neighborhood Information
The setting
What do five lawyers, three medical professionals and a mix of small business owners, computer technicians, designers and a dedicated teacher have in common? They all live at Gillham Row.
Construction on the historic lofts and newly designed townhomes at Gillham Row is well underway and is scheduled for completion Fall 2004. These three distinct housing options that make up the first phase of Gillham Row – the Battery Lofts, Triangle Townhomes and 30 Gillham Row – will bring homeowners to 33 new condominiums in this Urban Coeur community just south of Crown Center and Hospital Hill.
In phase two, 29 Gillham Row will introduce 32 new condominium lofts to the neighborhood. This builds on the success of the first phase of Gillham Row, which also includes a neighborhood coffee shop and an intimate urban park with Wi-Fi internet access. Focused on its boulevard park setting, the development emphasizes dynamic outdoor spaces with terrific views and ambience along with incomparable architecture. With Gillham Row, urban dwellers have a high quality alternative for a maintenance free lifestyle in a new neighborhood with an unparallel location.
The history of the neighborhood contributes a sense of time and place to the new development occurring in and around Gillham Row, inspiring high-quality architecture that will stand the test of time.
In this neighborhood where Victorian era houses once ruled exclusively, a new technology appeared that would change the urban landscape forever. When the automobile came to prominence on the streets of America in the 1920s, Gillham Road became the city’s main thoroughfare for the automotive trade, servicing prosperous Kansas Citians as they pushed south to the city’s new neighborhoods, such as Hyde Park, Union Hill and Longfellow Dutch Hill.
Gillham Road was the main artery connecting downtown to these burgeoning residential neighborhoods. It was a bustling streetscape of people living, working and entertaining themselves in the nearby restaurants, clubs and ballrooms (El Torreon, The Pla-Mor). The now infamous jazz clubs at 18th and Vine were becoming the destination for hip Kansas Citians.
Come back with us as we re-establish what early downtown neighborhoods enjoyed – a quality of life with a family focus and a sense of neighborhood pride, all surrounded by beautiful parks, boulevards, schools and churches. Enjoy more time with family and friends, with less wear and tear on you and your vehicle, yet still near all the terrific amenities Kansas City has to offer at Crown Center, Westport and the Plaza.
